Windows Defenders

The most pathetic technology enthusiast tribe are the Windows Defenders, pun intended.
I get it if you are forced to use Windows for work or you just don't give a shit about Operating Systems.
But acting as an apologist for Windows because you suck and don't have the patience to learn *nix systems is just pathetic.
If you failed to learn and said, yep, i tried and failed, then even that position is understandable.
BUT! Instead, these "people" (aka sub-human scum) not only failed to learn *nix systems but then preach about how Windows is great! Even though it is objectively worse, basically spyware, bloated bullshit.
Windows isn't great, you're just a knuckle dragging troglodyte!

I think arguably mac defenders are worse. Windows may be a bad operating system I fully agree, but it is only a bad operating system. Macos defenders are tacitly endorsing all of apple's practices regarding opposition to right to repair and their locked down "ecosystem" walled garden. Microsoft doesn't enforce this hardware-software parity and walled garden to the degree that apple does. If we're look purely at the OS, I think windows is worse because *nix like os are just better, but as a whole package mac is just slightly worse imo.

No but it sounded like a subject that would be better explored in a blog rather than a paragraph long post. A blog would also reach moar people.

Install SerenityOS. Can't compile it? Fuck yourself
16 Name: Anonymous 2024-07-31 09:41
I would hop over to linux if I had a second machine I didn't care about to mess around with and use the windows one for gayming only.

Compiling it is easy, just follow the guide. Issue comes if you have 2GiB of RAM (like I do). Then it takes 5 hours for Serenity to compile.

if you are on a modern windows, you can get a lot of the benefits of Linux using WSL. By default I think it's ubuntu-like but other distros are also possible to set up.
It's not ideal, but it does work pretty well if you don't have a second pc, don't want to dual boot and generally works a bit better than windows hosting VM.
22 Name: Anonymous 2024-08-04 06:52
You do not need any form of 'anti-virus' if you have even a shred of tech literacy
23 Name: Anonymous 2024-08-16 05:40
i just bought a framework laptop and put ubuntu on it. enjoying it so far though it'll really get put to work when school starts. going to dual-boot windows for a few programs like musescore and multisim
desktop is gonna stay windows though because gayming is so much easier

from an design point of view, i get why some people wanna use windows. UNIX is not the end all be all of operating systems (rather far from it), and it has a plethora of flaws and failures that contribute to people moving away from it. for one, windows has an actual API, which UNIX does not (but some derivative works do), and why wouldn't someone want a consistent API, its productive, consistent and centralised. modern UNIX variations, such as the BSD's, have an enormous lack of features, i know some concepts like port trees and particular software design patterns do come from the BSD world, but features are usually not exclusive or dependent on BSD and can be emulated on Windows (git submodules and writing better software, respectively). additionally, the Windows ecosystem (.NET, visual studio, vba/f#/c#/c++, direct X*), as far as im aware, are fairly productive on Windows and aren't as overtly "bloated bullshit" either, however i cannot personally atest to this as my knowledge of Windows comes from an external point of view and developing software for Windows outside of the operating system

i would buy a copy of Windows and use it unapologetically in the same way i would any other software i want to play around with, and i don't think there is anything wrong with that...

being hateful over an operating system is petty shit, you disuade people from ever touching UNIX by coming of as aggressive, coercive and demeaning and attacking them for their preferences... you do not have moral superiority because you use FOSS software and run a UNIX box, elitism is what kills the UNIX community

this, but the wording is poor, "tech literacy" isn't what keeps you safe, actively protecting yourself keeps you safe. you should be constantly verifying checksums and only connecting to the internet when strictly necessary, as well as routinely ensuring a project/mirror/file server/piece of software hasn't been backdoored

also there are more complicated and indirect vunerabilities that the above doesn't cover, so its wise to keep up to date with cyber-security RSS feeds and mailing lists just incase

I enjoy doing things the UNIX/POSIX way, I've been using Linux and the various other Unices for quite some time, however I don't find Windows to bad as bad as you make it out to be. For example portable programs, .exe files and installation wizards are still a clear advantage of Windows. Diehards will deny this and claim that distributing the source code and not the binary is the true Linux way of doing things, but they fail to notice that it's more about offline usability and archiving, which gets hard on Linux, if you don't want to get the source code of all dependencies as well. As >>24 pointed out, there is also the Win32Api, which makes programming a lot easier and is considerably more pleasant than it's Linux counterparts, not to mention it's just a unified way of handling things.

Unless you are playing anti cheat slop like fortnite or COD that actively monitors everything on your device you do not even need Windows for gayming and some windows games perform better with Proton/Wine and also pretty much all video game emulators have a GNU/Linux version.

Linux/Mac does have malware
Linux aren't free unless you review all source & compile it yourself. Inclusind compiling compiler toolchain itself on a trusted open hardware. Builds should be reproducible.

All systems are vulnerable.

Write your own better OS.

many unix apps run natively, and sources compile without MinGW.

linux have portable binaries. with static and dynamic linking. and source code tarballs : ./configure ; make ; make install . is that hard?
if some moron ship bloat with fuckton dependencies - that's shitware.
that's why people like minimalism.

Windows is a good OS. Max is a good OS, very user friendly UNIX. The downside is the practices of these company, privacy violations etc. if I had to get a computer for an older not super tech literate person. I would buy them a Mac.

Do you suggest everyone who has a computer has his own OS?
Most people just dont have time (and knowlegde) for this.
39 Name: Anonymous 2025-06-10 06:54
Hopefully reactOS becomes something, and then its basically over for windows.

It is time to open the source code of WinXP & Win7, under GNU, Satya Nadella, & publish it on your github. This will be the gift to India, & you could license it to India 1st.

holy Terry Davis, orly?
why are there so much OS'es? Amiga, Commodore, DOS, numbers of Windows, Rust Redox, collapseOS, kollibri, numbers of Apple, multiple BSD, OS/2, Androids ... ?
With next Win11 telemetry it is a ticket to Flossenbürg

Some people build their houses. Some rise their horses. Some make custom bikes, motorcycles. Many write their board\forum software from scratch.

You could pass your own OS you wrote to your granddauther and install in on your husband iPhone as a gift.

ReactOS has had 29(!) years to become something, I have no qualms with it unlike some people who are really mad about an understaffed hobbyist team working slowly but I don't really expect it to have much of an impact in my lifetime
